|The Russell Memorial Weekend 2009|
To mark the 15th festival commemorating the enormous traditional legacy of the Russell family from Doolin, the Russell Memorial Committee has put together an exciting programme of events for a weekend of music and entertainment from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd of February 2009.
The festival opened on Friday 20th with a concert at 8-00pm in the Russell Cultural Centre featuring our local talented musicians both young and old.
Russell Concert -Líadan
The Russell Concert on Saturday 21st Feb which took place between 2pm and 4-30pm with Master of Ceremonies, Pat Costelloe Clare FM, featured Líadan; a band comprising of six members: Síle Denvir, harpist; Deirdre Chawke, piano accordion; Valerie Casey and Claire Dolan, fiddles; Sarah-Jane Woods, flute; Elaine Cormican, whistles. The concert also featured The Fiddle Case - Eoin O'Neill, Quentin Cooper, Eimer Howley and Jon O'Connell; Seoda - Ian Keane and Friends; Michael Hynes, Dennis Liddy and Jack Talty; Terry Bingham; Yvonne Casey, Adam and Dave Shapiro; Pat Costello and Friends.
Russell Remembrance Mass
On Sunday the 22nd Feb at 1pm the Anniversary Remembrance Mass for the Russells was celebrated in Doolin Church to the accompaniment of hymns and songs from the Doolin church choir. It was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Russell grave, with songs of farewell and tunes in memory of the dead.
Russell Music events this year continued to focus on the music, song, and instrumentation heritage of the Russells with three music recitals beginning with Angela Crotty and Friends in McGann's Pub on Saturday 21st Feb at 11am . Adm Free.
On Sunday Feb 22nd there was a recital at 10-30am with Frank Custy and Friends in McDermott's Pub.
After the Rusell Concert on Saturday 21st Feb as usual there was an informal traditional singing recital at 6pm in the O'Gorman Room, Russell Cultural Centre, Adm Free
Set dancing was held at 3pm on Sunday 22nd at the Function Room in Hotel Doolin, music by Peter Griffin and the Four Courts Céilí Band.
Workshops were provided in the a variety of instruments from 10-30am - 12-30pm on Sat 21st and Sun 22nd February.
Events for the weekend also included the Monday night (Feb 23rd) "festival wrap-up" sessions and there were many informal live music sessions throughout the weekend in Doolin’s pubs and hotels.
